Week of May 31, 2009:
Sin
The problem that I have with the
word and meaning of sin is the judgment and perception
aspect that is so defining. Everyone has probably heard of
the seven deadly sins: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath,
envy and pride. The mention of these words brings up the
ideas around religion that lead us to believe that a
judgmental overseer and creator is keeping track of all our
actions. I like this quote from an unknown source: "Where
there is love, there is no sin."
The English word sin derives from
Old English synn. The same root appears in several other
Germanic languages and means "to be." Its present participle
is "being." Latin also has an old present participle of esse
in the word sons, which came to mean "guilty" in Latin. The
root meaning would appear to be "it is true"; that is, "the
charge has been proven." The Greek word hamartia is often
translated as sin in the New Testament, and it means "to
miss the mark" or "to miss the target."
I must be Greek to resonate with
that last definition (tee hee). Anyone can miss the mark
when facing the trials and tribulations of life, but who
wants the label of sinner? Buddhism does not recognize the
idea behind sin because in Buddhism there is a "Cause-Effect
Theory" known as Karma or action. It is time for me to take
action and receive a whisper from an angel on the word sin:
Sin is a word that connects to
feelings that are not within the intended meaning of the
word itself. Feeling shame, guilt, fear, and turning from
faith often replace the feelings of retrospect, spiritual
growth and personal responsibility associated with the
meaning. Once you go to the judgment aspect, the meaning
is lost, only to be replaced by a code or doctrine.
The original teachings are so distanced from Source, the
perspective has been altered to create an opportunity to
manipulate and control by those that would abuse such a
privilege. This has led many to turn from faith and from
the true energy that is available to all. Today's society
can resonate more with positive focus on living a life of
purpose rather than feelings of judgment and negative
behaviors.
Every human being is given a moral compass to know the
vibrational difference between right and wrong. You need
not look any further than your own feelings to know the
truth about your existence, without the discernment from
others leading you away from the spiritual path of peace.
If you feel unable to keep from the actions that take you
from your Divine life-purpose, this could be your signal
from your body that you have built illusions around your
life as a way to cope with addictive negative behaviors
and repeating events. The truth always illuminates the
life path, and beyond that are simply the lessons of life.
Learn today to live tomorrow in the energy of pure love.
Bring joy, ease suffering
and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
Blessings, Russell
