Squeaky Wheel
What is that old saying? The
squeaky wheel gets the grease or, as my father says, the
squeaky wheel gets the attention! It struck me on my
morning ride that in some ways, our society has turned
toward the energy behind this saying. In almost every
aspect of our culture, it seems that the loudest voice
gets action or reaction.
Opinion news journalism, "shock the
viewer" marketing and outrageous attention-getting
entertainment are all phrases that describe ways the media
gains the attention of the public. There are several
problems with this approach, in my view, as the loudest
complainers are now dictating agenda in many facets that
affect my lifestyle. It also means that several voices are
never heard simply because they are not "squeaky"! A good
example is the speed bump that damages everyone's vehicle in
order to slow down the two percent of the population that
drive recklessly through our neighborhood.
The other problem is that my wheels
generally don't squeak unless provoked by anger (tee hee).
Admittedly, this is something that I am working on, which is
the notion that a loving expression that speaks softly
toward an issue goes largely unnoticed.
American humorist Josh Billings
(1818-1885) recites in a poem, The Kicker: "I hate to be a
kicker [complainer], I always long for peace, but the wheel
that does the squeaking is the one that gets the grease".
However, the idea of the idiom is much older. A manuscript
from about 1400 had: "Ever the worst spoke of the cart
creaks". Let's listen for a squeaky wheel in the midst of a
whisper from an angel.
Your frustration with this
aspect of modern society can lead to passive-aggressive
behaviors, loss of faith, conflicts and a negative
outlook. Understand that the shields of protection enter
any conflict where there is a challenge presented. Certain
actions solicit a response that is usually filled with
some teaching, such as finding ways to communicate with
everyone involved with the attempt to solve a problem.
When others stand on the proverbial soapbox, you are given
a choice to examine your beliefs and choose your battles.
Ultimately those willing to use their gifts and who have
stepped into their power are finding ways to effect change
within a structure or, better yet, finding ways to
completely change the structure to create bigger changes.
The challenge is in altering the contour of thought
without the blocks created by forceful methods, and this
can be accomplished more easily from the energy of love
expressed through a combination of action, thought,
compassion and presenting ideas. Once again it is your
choice that finds the energy in which your beliefs are
expressed.
Leaving behind all judgments around the reception of your
perspective and remaining open to guidance can bring
peace, understanding and acceptance to both the battle and
the outcome. You want to avoid being drawn into actions
that undermine your personal integrity or ability to
express your truth.
Bring joy, ease suffering
and create beauty, then dance like you mean it!
Blessings, Russell
