Doldrums
Thanks for the request to study
the word doldrums, which is an unusual and rarely spoken
word these days. Doldrums has been associated with sailors
over the years, but may sneak into our landlocked holidays
and the shifting sands of our time on Earth.
Doldrums, according to Merriam-Webster, means a spell of
listlessness or despondency or state or period of
inactivity, stagnations or slump. Doldrums is also a part
of the ocean near the equator abounding in calms, squalls,
and light shifting winds. The exact etymology of
"doldrums" is not certain, though it is believed to be
related to the Old English "dol," meaning "foolish" - a
history it shares with our adjective "dull."
Everyone gets the doldrums - a feeling of low spirits and
lack of energy - every once in a while. The doldrums
experienced by sailors, however, are usually of a
different variety. In the mid-19th century, the word once
reserved for a feeling of despondency came to be applied
to certain tropical regions of the ocean marked by the
absence of strong winds. Sailing vessels, reliant on wind
propulsion, struggled to make headway in these regions,
leading to long, arduous journeys.
Maybe the term is not as distant from the sailor's
experience, in that, as we experience our journey, there
can be a loss of momentum or passion to keep us sailing on
our way. Let's get some wind in our sails with a whisper
from an angel:
Spirit moves incredibly fast
and is substantially slowed down inside the vessel known
as the human body. When the body experiences a slow-down
or pause, the result can be the doldrums, just as sailors
experienced from a deep connection with the ocean.
Sometimes you may feel like you lack direction or desire,
and this can feel uneasy, as if you're stuck in time and
space with no fuel to get things going.
The human body responds to the stars in the same way that
the tides of the ocean are responding. The alignment of
the planets brings forth an energy that is felt on deep
levels and in a variety of ways within the human journey.
For example, a Mercury Retrograde is akin to an adult
time-out. This is a period of reflection where you go
inside to answer questions around how you handled and
presented yourself to others. These questions are usually
connected with your personal integrity, and the purpose is
to illuminate the needed changes and spiritual growth in
your life.
The depth of a moment of doldrums can be very serving and
can signal that you are integrating sometimes harsh
lessons around grief, loss and trauma that can reach back
into your entire life. The mirror of reflection ultimately
provides insight into spiritual growth, so move through
these periods with patience, understanding and nurturing
energy as you integrate your experiences with the same
resolve and high vibrations normally present in your life.
The wind will return to fill your sails as you continue on
your journey toward the horizon. Hold the never-ending
faith, curiosity and innocence that were naturally yours
as a child as you maneuver through the doldrums.
Bring joy, ease suffering
and create beauty, then dance like you mean it! Blessings, Russell
